Media Skills and Personal Presentation Training Workshops

Media Australia runs customised workshops in 'handling the media', and 'personal presentation skills' - both designed for executives and other key staff involved in corporate affairs, marketing and public relations.

Media workshops developed by Media Australia typically cover the basic theory and practice of modern electronic media communication - as applied in regional and metropolitan news and current affairs settings.

Participants get ample opportunity to practice their personal communication techniques, and gain new insights into improving their media handling skills.

Typical media sessions include a range of practical exercises involving television and radio interviews, all conducted by experienced professional journalists using broadcast quality equipment and methods.

Typical personal presentation skills' sessions cover everything from audience analysis and speech-writing for a range of occasions, through to timing, delivery and coping with nerves.

Many clients also appreciate our critical review and advice on the use of visual aids involving PowerPoint presentations, datashows and portable computers.

Media Australia personnel offer ongoing critical (yet supportive) feedback and peer review to assist participants to better understand their strengths and weaknesses, making them more aware of performance areas that require further practice or improvement.

At the core of every workshop is the premise that no-one comes away from a one or two-day workshop as a media or personal presentation 'expert'.

However, most participants are certainly placed well on track to achieving their desired goals of being able to communicate and deliver - under pressure - succinct, interesting and relevant corporate or educative information.

Typical Media Skills Workshop Content:

Communications' Theory

  • Communications Model
  • Media Types (real examples)
  • Barriers to Good Communication
  • What is News?
  • Electronic Media Production Basics
  • Personal Communications Skills
  • Preparing for TV News Interview - format, dress & grooming, techniques, legals, etc

TV News Story Analysis

  • examination of typical bulletin structure and timing
  • analysis of news story structure: reader intro, script, overlay & 'grabs', etc

Communications' Strategies

  • Forming a Corporate Media & Public Relations Policy / Stance
  • Crisis Management: Dealing with Damage Control / Tough Corporate Issues

Practical Media Participation:

In a one-day media workshop participants generally undertake at least five different TV and radio interviews dealing with a range of subject matter relating to their particular expertise and/or role or responsibilities.

These interviews get progressively 'harder' as the workshop progresses (and confidence and skill levels hopefully rise!).

Participants are therefore advised to be fully familiar with current and future aspects of policy affecting their operations - as well as broader corporate policies.
