Youth Mental Health Series: Getting Over Grief

Program Overview

Grief is a human experience that touches us all – and usually results from some kind of intense personal loss. Many young people might first experience such loss in competitive sport, or the loss of a cherished belonging, or even the end of a friendship. Much more painful however is the loss that comes with the death of a friend – resulting in overwhelming grief.

So in this new 23 minute program from Media Australia we try to ease the loss felt by some young people by using intimate personal insights into grief, combined with sensitive yet commonsense advice, to explore key questions such as:

  • what is grief?
  • how does loss relate to grief?
  • what are the stages of grief?
  • why is adolescent grief so special?
  • how do individuals express their grief?
  • how can young people cope with grief?
  • and how can friends, parents or teachers help a grieving young person?

 The program features expert information from the Grief Education Center, a leading Education Department social worker and Assistant Principal – together with two case studies on bereavement, involving:

  • the heart rending account of a group of secondary students grieving the sudden loss of their classmate Kelly (who died in a triple road fatality);
  • and the equally emotional account of Rosalee Thorpe, who tragically lost her 18 year old son Adam after a 10 month battle with cancer.

This thought-provoking program comes with Teacher Notes and should be compulsory viewing for every secondary and TAFE level student - as well as their teachers, parents and school counsellers keen to improve the welfare role of our schools.

The program should also be required viewing for anyone involved in educating, training, mediating or caring for young people as they grow into adults - such as trainee teachers, welfare & social workers, police officers, nurses, doctors and other care professionals.
