Visual Communication & Design: Investigating Professional Practice - Sunbeam's Cafe Aromatic
This new 22 minute program from Media Australia takes us inside the design studios of Australia's leading small appliance manufacturers - Sunbeam - to investigate the professional practice used by this award winning company to tackle a new product design brief.
The brief centres on the design of a trendy new espresso coffee machine - the Cafe Aromatic - for the Australian domestic market, to compete against rival products imported from Europe.
We see how the successful design of this new bench top electrical appliance involves a range of talented in-house specialists at Sunbeam across the areas of Marketing, Design and Technology.
Their combined creative solution to this product design brief includes:
- identifying the needs of the target market
- researching competitors' products in the Australian market
- the use of traditional and computer aided drawing (CAD) to design the Cafe Aromatic testing the design through 3D models and working prototypes
- designing and developing unique microchip technology and programming to control the Cafe Aromatic and assessing the Cafe Aromatic's (offshore) manufacturing process.
Using succinct on-camera interviews and extensive visual overlay of concept drawings through to the finished product, this fascinating program gives students a unique insight into:
- the methods used by Sunbeam's design team for inspiration in designing the Cafe Aromatic- such as gathering, analysing and organising information;
- the roles, relationships and work of specialist personnel involved in Sunbeam's visual communication production process;
- the range of decisions made by Sunbeam staff about the choice of materials, production systems, media, design elements and principles in the production of visual communications for the product brief;
- and appraisal methods and processes used by Sunbeam to refine and evaluate ideas in developing final presentations.
This program is an essential curriculum resource for students of:
- Visual Communication (VCE); Unit 3, Outcome 3: 'Investigating professional practice'; and
- Design & Technology (HSC); Outcome H1.2 'Processes used by designers'.
The program is also an excellent learning resource for graphic design students at TAFE, VET, university and other tertiary sectors.
Two complementary programs produced by Media Australia are also available in this current Visual Communication & Design series:
- Information Design to solve The Tandou Brief at Hoyne Design, Melbourne, and
- Environment / Landscape Design for Melbourne Zoo's $10m Trail of the Elephants.
