New Australian Food Technology - Chicken: from Eggs to Takeaway!

This new 22 minute program produced by Media Australia for senior students of Food Technology Australia-wide traces the production of chicken: from newly hatched chicks, through to the drive-through at the local chicken takeaway, or the meat section of a suburban supermarket.

Specifically, the program would uses interview grabs, on-screen presenter pieces to camera, narration, graphics, and lively industry based overlay to cover:

  • the mass-production of eggs and newly hatched chicks
  • the sorting and sexing of chicks
  • the feeding, housing and growth of meat birds (broilers)
  • chicken industry issues - such as growth promotants, antibiotics, disease control, new feed developments, etc
  • the slaughter of birds on highly efficient production lines ('sensitively' shot at Hazeldene's Chicken Farms - one of Australia's largest producers, based in Central Victoria)
  • the OH&S, hygiene and food safety issues concerning the chicken meat industry
  • packaging, refrigeration and transport of chicken meat products
  • the hygienic display, storage and sale of chicken meat products at a supermarket (Safeway), and retail outlet (Lenards).
  • and expert nutritional advice on chicken in a balanced diet.

 
By viewing this program, students will learn key messages about modern (chicken) meat production, processing, refrigeration, transport and safe handling.

They will also learn the role chicken plays in the Australian food industry, and its nutritional value in a balanced diet (through expert input from Nutrition Australia).

Structure:

Approximately 22 minutes long (maximum), structured as an opener / intro, then 4 x 5 minute sequential segments, and summary / coda.

Market Applicability:

This program would be an invaluable resource for Food Technology in Years 8 -10, across all state curricula.

It would be of particular application to NSW HSC Food Technology (9.1 Sectors of the Australian Food Industry and 9.2 Food Manufacture), and Victoria's VCE Food and Technology (Unit 3 Food Product Development & Unit 4 Food Production and Food Controls).

Further markets would include hospitality and food technology courses run in our TAFEs, through VET and VCAL, and courses run by RTOs.
